Let’s Talk Facts!

Dr. Richard Cutler, during his time as director of the Anti-Aging Research Department of the National Institutes of Health, Washington, DC, stated:

"The amount of antioxidants that you maintain in your body is directly
proportional to how long you will live."

The BFS Nutritional Guidelines recognizes this fact and recommends a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (9-14 daily servings, as recommended by JAMA), which helps raise one’s antioxidant level.

Next, the conclusion of a study conducted in Europe and released in the spring of 2006 stated that “raising one’s antioxidant level can lead to a 20 percent longer life span.” For students enrolled in school today, that would mean an extra 15 years of longevity. At BFS, our ultimate goal is to create positive attitudes and behaviors that will carry students to a healthier, fuller lifestyle that will be carried over into adulthood. If we can put students on a path to living 20 percent longer, wouldn’t that be a blessing?

Virtually all age-related, degenerative disease can be attributed to free-radical damage. Free radicals are naturally occurring molecules that exist in the body and are caused by oxidative stress, environmental additives and chemicals, and other factors everyone cannot escape. Free radicals have a missing electron and therefore attack normal cells to "steal" an electron to complete themselves. Every cell in our body undergoes 10,000 free-radical hits every day. If the free radical can penetrate the cell wall and steal the electron from the DNA of that cell, mutations can occur that replicate and can lead to disease.

Antioxidants have an extra molecule they can donate to the free radical, which neutralizes it before damage occurs. Having more antioxidants than free radicals in your system means that you are better equipped to ward off the onset of many common diseases, such as:

  • Heart Disease
  • Cancers
  • Inflammation
  • Diabetes
  • AIDS
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Skin/Collagen Aging
  • Radiation poisoning
  • Cataracts
  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD),
which is the number-one cause of blindness as people age

If we could set our students and staff on a path that would help them avoid these and other age-related diseases, wouldn’t that be an additional blessing? Dr. Lester Packer, the nation’s foremost authority on antioxidants and aging, stated in a CNN interview, “Everyone should learn their optimal body defense score (a measure of the overall antioxidant level existing in your body). Once you have your number, work to increase it and maintain it with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and vitamin supplements.” Mike Sobb, director of Marketing for Duke Athletics states, "Optimal nutrition is critical for the health and vitality of student-athletes performing under the stress of study and athletic competition."

BFS believes that proper diet and nutrition are critical for all students for…

According to nutrition experts, and documented by testimony in the Congressional Record, a wide variety of diseases are caused by or exacerbated by vitamin- and mineral deficiencies. Mineral deficiency diseases can be attributed to the following: heart disease and heart attacks to deficiency of selenium, copper and calcium; strokes and ruptured aortic aneurysm to deficiency of copper; arthritis and bone diseases to a deficiency of calcium and boron; mental depression and hyperactivity to a deficiency of calcium; hypoglycemia and fatigue to a deficiency of chromium and vanadium; blood problems to a deficiency of iron; neurological irregularities to a deficiency of potassium and magnesium; and a lack of bacterial resistance to a deficiency of sulfur.

Vitamin deficiency diseases can be attributed to the following: scurvy to vitamin C deficiency; neurological development problems and pernicious anemia to vitamin B12 deficiency; rickets and joint disorders to vitamin D deficiency, cancer and cataracts to vitamin E deficiency; numerous metabolic problems to various vitamin deficiencies.
